Time for a dental exam and cleaning at our Greenpoint office? Teeth cleaning is a procedure for the removal of tartar (mineralized plaque) that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in areas that are difficult to reach in routine toothbrushing. Our cleanings are performed by a dental hygienist who is licensed to administer anesthetics and nitrous oxide as necessary. Professional cleanings are referred to as tooth polishing, scaling when too much tartar or calcium deposits have accumulated on the teeth. This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth.
Examination – Cleaning – X-rays
Most dental hygienists recommend having the teeth professionally cleaned every six months. More frequent cleaning and examination may be necessary during treatment of dental and other oral disorders. Routine examination of the teeth is recommended at least every year. This may include yearly digital x-rays, with reduced patient radiation versus the old films.
Good oral hygiene helps to prevent cavities, tartar build-up, and gum disease. Do not wait until the build up of tartar is so extreme that it will require a more vigorous cleaning to remove years or tartar buildup.
